Step 7: Rest – Our Sabbath in God
Key Verse:
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28 - NIV)
Up to this point, every step we’ve taken has led us deeper into communion with the Father and the life of faith Jesus taught us to live. As we let go of our sins and bad habits, grow in knowledge through God’s Word and Spirit, and testify to His power and grace, we begin to bear fruit—fruit that will last, just as Scripture promises (John 15:16).
But now, we need to understand something crucial: no matter what work God calls us to do, we are, at best, His co-workers (1 Corinthians 3:9). The work belongs to Him. Many people try to take credit for something that was never theirs in the first place. Throughout the Psalms, we’re reminded to rest in God, and this is a fundamental lesson in learning to depend on Him. On the seventh day, Scripture tells us that God rested after finishing creation. Now, in this seventh step, I encourage you to rest, too—but in Him. After all, He is the One most invested in seeing His good, pleasing, and perfect will fulfilled in us.
What Is Resting in God?
Resting in God isn’t just about taking a physical break; it’s an attitude of trust and surrender. It’s recognizing that while we are called to work and bear fruit, the outcome is in His hands. Jesus invites us:
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28 - NIV)
This rest is a refuge for the soul, a deep relief for the heart that trusts in the Lord.
Why Is Rest Important?
Here are three key reasons:
It reminds us who is in control: Resting is a way of acknowledging that God is in charge, and we are simply His co-workers.
It renews our strength: Physical, emotional, and spiritual rest allows us to keep going with renewed energy (Isaiah 40:31).
It draws us closer to God: In rest, we create space to hear His voice and enjoy His presence.
How to Rest in God
Now for some practical steps—because true rest in God doesn’t just happen; we need to be intentional about it.
Make time for silence: Step away from distractions and spend time in prayer and meditation, listening to God.
Trust His promises: Remind yourself that God cares for you and is faithful to complete His work (Philippians 1:6).
Practice spiritual rest: Set aside regular moments for both physical and spiritual renewal, just as God did after creation (Genesis 2:2-3). This isn’t about legalistically observing a Sabbath day but about cultivating a lifestyle of resting in God, even in the middle of life’s demands.
Let go of control: Surrender your worries and burdens to God, trusting that He will act in His perfect timing (1 Peter 5:7).
A Practical Example
Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray and rest (Luke 5:16). Even in the midst of His demanding ministry, He knew the importance of seeking the Father and renewing His strength.
Reflection Question
"What do you need to surrender to God today in order to experience the true rest only He can give?"
Closing Prayer
Lord, teach me to rest in You. Help me trust that the work is Yours and that I am simply Your co-worker. Renew my strength and my soul so I can continue this journey with joy and full dependence on You. Amen.
