Step 3: The Holy Spirit – Our Companion on the Christian Journey
Key Verse:
"And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth." (John 14:16-17 - NIV)
In the previous step, we talked about the need to leave behind the baggage that hinders us on our journey. I know, it’s not an easy task to let go of some things. Often, we become dependent on them, and as we are naturally sinners, these things attract and entangle us. But there is a promise in the Bible that assures us we can be set free from them with the help of our travel companion. Oh, I forgot to tell you: we will never be alone on this journey!
Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, sent by Jesus to be with us after His ascension. He is not an impersonal force but a divine person who guides, comforts, teaches, and empowers us. He is our Comforter (John 14:16), the Spirit of Truth (John 16:13), and the Seal of our salvation (Ephesians 1:13).
What does the Holy Spirit do in us?
As we make room for His work in our lives, we can count on the benefits of what He can do in us, for us and through us. Among these works, I highlight:
He convicts us of sin (John 16:8).
He guides us (Romans 8:14).
He strengthens us (Ephesians 3:16).
He transforms us, producing the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
How to walk with the Holy Spirit?
The simple and direct answer is by faith. However, as we will explore this further in the next step, here are some practical recommendations:
Invite His presence daily.
Listen to His voice through prayer and Scripture.
Obey His direction without hesitation.
Cultivate intimacy with Him. Talk to Him as you would with a close friend. Remember Step 1.
Practical Example:
Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would be with us forever (John 14:16). He is our guarantee that we are never alone, even in the most difficult moments.
Reflection Question:
"How have you recognized and responded to the presence of the Holy Spirit in your daily life?"
Final Prayer:
Holy Spirit, thank You for being my constant companion. Help me to hear Your voice, follow Your direction, and depend on Your strength. Transform me into the image of Christ. Amen.
