Step 2: Throw Off Sin – Running with Freedom

Key Verse:

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." (Hebrews 12:1 - NIV)

The Christian life is often compared to a race. Not a sprint but a marathon that requires focus, discipline, and perseverance. However, some things can hinder us from running well: the sin that entangles us and the weights we carry. Imagine even trying to walk while carrying heavy luggage.? The author of Hebrews urges us to throw off all of this. But what does this mean in practice?

Why do we need to throw off sin?

Sin and unnecessary weights hold us back. They make us tired, distracted, and unable to move forward. Imagine a runner trying to complete a marathon while carrying a backpack full of rocks. He might keep going, but he will never reach his full potential. In the same way, sin prevents us from living the abundant life God has planned for us.

Furthermore, the Bible reveals to us that our hearts are idolatrous (Ezekiel 14:3-5). It is always looking for an idol to take the place of God. So, walking with them is a sure sign of stumbling later on.

Throwing off sin begins with honestly recognizing what is hindering us. It could be a recurring sin, a harmful habit, or even a toxic relationship. Whatever it is, God calls us to get rid of it, not by our strength, but by His grace.

How to throw off sin?

Here are some practical hints:

  • Recognize the sin: Ask God to reveal what has hindered your walk.

  • Confess and abandon: Confess your sins to God (1 John 1:9) and make the decision to leave them behind.

  • Seek help: Don’t try to overcome it alone. Ask for support from fellow believers or a spiritual leader.

  • Focus on Christ: Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Practical Example:

Paul teaches us to "put off" the old self and to "put on" the new self (Ephesians 4:22-24). This means that throwing off sin is not just about leaving something behind but also about embracing the new life we have in Christ.

Reflection Question:

"What do you need to throw off today to run the race of faith with freedom?"

Final Prayer:

Lord, help me recognize what has been holding me back and throw off everything that hinders me from following You fully. Give me strength to abandon sin and to run with perseverance, keeping my eyes fixed on You. Amen.
